Best Lunch NYC
According to chapter seven of any science book in high school, stock photos tell us eating a packed lunch of a sensible salad is great for any nearby park bench. Those photos were most likely not taken in NYC. This is not to say you can’t cop-a-squat in Union Square with your peanut butter and jelly, but why do so when there are so many delicious options near you in this city so nice they named it twice. Options are a plenty, but lunchtime definitely can also offer up some bargains. The same food at a slightly better price? Now you’re talking. So where can someone looking for scrumptious food,
Let The Winslow get you through the midday grind. This popular and often talked about Gin House and Eatery propositions an all day happy hour (Monday-Friday, 12pm-7pm) as well as an amazing $10 lunch special of a Burger and a Beer combo. This lunch special also runs Monday-Friday until 5pm. You get The Winslow burger, which is a house grind of Pat LaFrieda dry-aged beef on a Balthazar brioche bun served with your choice of the select beers on happy hour that day. The burger itself is so mouth-watering you’ll only reach for the paired happy hour beer for fun, not function. Designed by Executive Chef Nathan Pauley, it is one of the best burgers in NYC in a delightful low-key lunch spot. Enjoying this lunch special makes you a connoisseur of finer things all while remaining responsibly frugal– not a bad way to sneak away from the office. Your boss, even if he or she did not like the fact you had a drink at lunch, would have to respect the prudent way in which you supported both your personal and local economy. (Which, if one could be so bold, Gary, you probably should not look down your nose at your employee’s ability to cope with your micromanagement and self-medicate despite your joke of a health care plan.) It also works for you and your budget if you just happen to be in the East Village or Gramercy neighborhood and our looking for a tasty deal. And science book be damned, you might be tempted to get your Winslow lunch to go and enjoy it in beautiful Stuyvesant Park! Just a thought.
Best Lunch Specials NYC
The burger and beer weekday lunch special is brilliant and one of the best lunch specials in East Village or Gramercy (maybe even the West Village if the weather is nice and you’d like to take a stroll). Though this is one of The Winslow’s best sellers, it is not to say The Winslow Burger is the only delicious bite the Winslow boasts. In fact, before reading the detailed and often quotable menu, you should probably make sure your salivary glands are well rested, because they are going to get a work out. Executive Chef Nathan Pauley cultivates a frisky menu, which gives a head-nod to the establishment’s British roots, while all the while coming up with fresh and seasonal dishes sure to please even the pickiest of eaters. It may be a gin house but this eatery knows its way around a nosh. Another popular dish is the Irish Dip Sandwich. This comes with braised lamb and tickler cheddar served on a sesame baguette with a side of house made Guinness a jus and fries. There also is lighter fare such as the seasonal kale salad which comes with chopped black and green kale, marinated chickpeas, roasted red peppers, charred cucumbers, lemon ricotta and sherry vinaigrette. If you’re in the mood to walk on the sweeter side, The Winslow claims some mad skillets with their chocolate chip cookie cake served with a scoop of Il Laboratorio’s crème fraiche gelato. This gelato is not your bodega’s ice cream. (Side note: don’t forget the side nibbles. Standouts include: scotch egg, gochujang duck wings, and blistered shishitos served with roasted red pepper aioli, shaved parmesan and almonds.)
Many people, perhaps products of a bygone generation, seem to wax nostalgic for the Mad Men era of drinking during lunch. This wistful tradition endured only in a time and place where society had not yet deemed it fit to judge participants of such tried and true practices. If you’d like to have a liquid lunch special, sans judgment, The Winslow opens its doors with immediate gratification and drink specials. Every weekday, starting at noon, you can get one of the many happy hour specials which includes: select $5 cans, $6 Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Grigio, $6 select draughts, or the $8 gin and tonic of the day. The cocktail menu, created by beverage designer and Tales of the Cocktail winner Cait Moorhead, offers many enjoyable and interesting specialty cocktails as well as over 40 different brands and styles of gin with botanical pairings. Sometimes a lunchtime drink helps you handle your business a bit better for the rest of the day (or at least a bit more magnanimously). Don’t worry; no one keeps secrets better than your bartender.
Lunch Specials NYC
This city moves fast, especially during the workday, and nothing goes faster than your break. With so few minutes to yourself it’s nice to find a laidback lunch spot where you can get good drinks, good food and friendly conversation if so desired. The Winslow is a gin house and eatery so unlike many midtown establishments, stuffy corporate airs are not part of its ambiance. This place inexplicably has the casual vibe you are looking for in your NYC lunch spot—the only difference is it offers high-end food and drinks for low-end costs. These two concepts seem to rarely mesh, especially when used to NYC pricing. Whether you live or work near Union Square and are looking for fun things to do with friends this summer in NYC, The Winslow has the specials near you to make everyone in your party happy.
The Winslow is a Gin House and Eatery that makes you forget you’re grabbing a quick bite at a bar. The food and drinks are so good they almost silence the chaos that is the surrounding siren and catcall filled symphony that is East Village’s 14th Street. It may seem odd placement for such an establishment to exist amongst its Ihop or 7/11 cohorts, but nestled in amid the fast food and tchotchke shops on congested throughway of East Village and Gramercy is this oasis of gin, cocktails and delicious pub cuisine.
Finding the Best Spot in NYC—Lunch or Otherwise:
This cozily lit and often buzzed about 14th Street spot serves heaping portions of both classic and newly reimagined English and New Age American dishes. Even the size and scope of the burger can rarely keep it from being demolished due to every bite remaining delectable and absolutely worth it. The house HP glazed Pork Belly Butty BLT hosts stack on stacks of bacon and pork, which delivers the perfect balance of fat and salt with no side of regret. If you want to stay in classic territory, the fish and chips entrée consists of a whopping portion of Fuller’s London Pride Pale Ale beer battered skate wing, house tartar and skin-on fries (or fat chips if you are feeling quite British).
Pro tip: wash any of these down with one of the many playful and unique concoctions on The Winslow’s specialty cocktail list. If you are venturing towards the more savory and intriguing side the recommendation would be “The Saffronal Frontier,” made from saffron infused Spring 44 Old Tom Gin, Pimms, Strega, tamarind and fresh orange juice. If you are looking for something that strikes a tantalizing balance between fruity and bitter notes it would have to be the “A Time Tequila”. This potion is mixed with a dehydrated grapefruit infused Espolon Tequila Blanco, Montenegro Amaro, Select Apertivo, matcha green tea, raw honey and garnished with a smoked grapefruit peel. All potations are packed with flavor, batched for efficiency, and served with a smile.
