Glendalough Gin Club
Tuesday, May 3rd, 7 PM
Glendalough Distillery was inspired by the story of Saint Kevin during their quest to bring independent Irish Whiskey back to prominence.
Like many Irish Saints, Saint Kevin was of royal lineage. Legend says he was led to a partially man-made cave, now called St. Kevin’s Bed. He spent seven years becoming one with nature. A community developed on the shores of the nearby lake, as followers came to seek advice from Saint Kevin.
He is considered the founder of Glendalough Monastery in County Wicklow, Ireland. He lived out his days piously presiding over his monastery in Glendalough. Canonized by Pope Pius X, there are many legends about and cultural references to Saint Kevin.
St Kevin and the Blackbird’ by Seamus Heaney tells the story of how he stood still as a statue while a blackbird built a nest in the safety of his hand. He stood until the nest was built and the bird had laid its eggs and they had hatched.
This story is what inspired Glendalough Distillery to always remember the importance of the beginning. For this reason, you will find the image of Saint Kevin, arms outstretched on the label of every bottle. Another reason why we wanted to bring Glendalough to The Winslow Gin Club.
Like the sixth-century monks who inspired them, Glendalough Distillery began with making Pucci, which is considered the world’s first distilled spirit, and then whiskey. Glendalough Distillery then captured the botanical richness of the mountains in their gin. Today, they offer three types of gin:
- Rose Gin: This is possibly the most beautiful gin when poured because of its soft pink hue. Rose Gin is a vapor-distilled spirit using both cultivated and wild roses that blend perfectly with the juniper to create the taste of sweet spice accented by roses and berries. It’s perfect for a gin and tonic with lime and fresh mint or in a dry martini.
- Wild Gin: Foraged local plants go straight from the field and into the still to be slowly distilled in micro-batches. This gin goes exceptionally well paired with a grapefruit wedge and sprig of basil.
- Seasonal Gin: Only available in Ireland or online, these batches of gin are made seasonally and are made from what has ripened locally. This means green shoots in spring, the taste of a wild meadow in the summer, wild fruits and berries in the fall, and even rare winter batches.
Brockman’s Gin Club
Tuesday, May 17th, 7:00 PM
The distillers of Brockmans Gin have declared it the “Properly Improper Gin” because they respect tradition but are never bound by it. Mysterious and enticing, their gin uses traditional juniper berries enhanced by the unusual pairing of coriander, citrus, and blueberries to create a gin that is anything but expected.
The juniper berries used by Brockman’s grow wild in Tuscany and give hints of pine and lavender to the gin. They are combined with flavors of Northern European blueberries and blackberries, Spanish almonds, Valencian lemons and oranges, angelica from Belgium and Saxony, Bulgarian coriander, Italian orris, and Asian cassia bark and licorice.
The botanicals are slowly steeped in pure grain spirit and then distilled in a traditional copper still. The Brockman’s gin recipe delivers a unique and intensely smooth gin. It’s not like any other gin you have ever tasted!
Brockman’s gin is wonderful all on its own or with tonic and botanicals. However, where it really shines is in mixed drinks. Brockman’s cocktail recipes bring a different and refreshing taste to mixed drinks – all of which you can stay and enjoy after The Winslow Gin Club.
Gin Adventures
Glendalough Gin and Brockman’s Gin are both exquisite, but couldn’t be any further from each other in nature. Glendalough Gin is steeped in tradition and prides itself in being made of fresh local ingredients. Brockman’s Gin is worldly and pushes the boundaries into a new and exciting flavor.
