A Brief History of the Happy Hour
The Happy Hour is as American as apple pie. It was, in fact, started by the United States Navy as a way to boost the morale of sailors. Their events included dancing, drinking, and various types of entertainment. Quickly the term became prominent during prohibition and referred to the hour patrons would spend in the speakeasy before attending dinner in a restaurant with no alcohol.
By the late 1940s and early 1950s, restaurants and bars everywhere were advertising food and drink specials encouraging patrons to come in during “Happy Hour”. By 1960, the term was commonly used and even appeared in the “Saturday Evening Post.” helping it to gain even more popularity.
