Tuesday, June 7th at 7:00pm EST – June’s Gin Clubs
Blood Monkey Gin promises to cut the crap. They aren’t about the fashionable, kitschy and frankly sometimes overdone botanicals in some gins.
Blood Monkey is an Irish Craft Gin that is all about the flavor and not about the trends. They take their inspiration from the flavor of genever, the ancestor of all gins. They take their name and logo from the 1600s seafaring practice of “bleeding the monkey.”
In the seventeenth century, sailors in the Royal Navy would sneak spirits by siphoning them off of the Admiral’s cask. They would use a straw to tap a drilled hole in the bottom of a cask of gin, brandy or rum. They were able to get so drunk using this practice that some of them actually got alcohol poisoning!
The tradition, independance and spirit of these sailors is imparted into the logo, the name and also the big bold flavors that make up Blood Monkey Gin. They do not claim to have perfectly paired flavors or delicate infusions. What you get with Blood Monkey is straight up in your face flavor.
They go big on rosemary, kaffir lime and Szechuan pepper. They lay their flavor out there on the table and let you judge for yourself. This is a gin that tastes so good and so pure, you will want to drink it straight!
The Botanist Islay Dry Gin
The Botanist Gin Club
Tuesday, June 21st at 7:00pm EST – June’s Gin Clubs
The Botanist Islay Dry Gin is an inspired spirit. Off the coast of Scotland lies the Isle of Islay. Islay has nine distilleries. The distilleries are known around the world for the distinct peaty and smoky flavor of their whiskies.
At the southwestern most tip of the island is Bruichladdich Distillery where The Botanist Islay Dry Gin is made. Bruichladdich Distillery was founded by a pair of brothers in 1881. After the ebbs and flows of history, the distillery ended up in the hands of Simon Coughlin and Mark Reynier more than 100 years later.
They hired Jim McEwan as the head distiller and Duncan McGillivray as distillery manager. Their challenge was to create a gin that would capture the essence of the Isle of Islay. Of the 33 sustainable plants that could be locally foraged to use for their flavor, McEwan chose 22 as the ingredients needed for the gin.
The recipe used for The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, a representation of the heart and soul of the Isle of Islay, has been untouched since its conception. It is the recipe for the spirit that is the Isle of Islay.
The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, although rich with botanicals, has a traditional gin nose with lots of juniper, lemon and orange delicately blended with woodruff and meadowsweet. This is a gin that can transport you to another time and place.
