How did NFL Games and NFL football start? The birth of football happened right here in NYC. At the Fifth Avenue Hotel, which used to be on Madison Square, representatives from four universities came together to lay out the actual rules to this new game which was somewhat like rugby, somewhat like soccer, but was not either. The men from Rutgers, Princeton, Yale and Columbia laid out twelve rules to govern the game, and football was officially born.
Years later, professional football would take hold of NYC when the New York Giants were the cornerstone of the young and struggling NFL. Professional football became the only professional sport to have a team in each of the five boroughs. Of course, currently both the New York Giants and the New York Jets claim the city as home.
It’s no wonder then, that New Yorkers love NFL game football. Because NYC attracts so many people from all over the country, and even the world, it is not unusual to see jerseys representing any of 32 NFL teams when you are out. No matter which team you are rooting for, a great place to catch a game is The Winslow Gin House and Eatery.
